Devo – Forgiveness

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you – Ephesians 4:32

Forgive as the Lord forgave you – Colossians 3:13

Forgive others, and you will be forgiven – Luke 6:37

The Bible sure has a lot to say about forgiveness. So it must be pretty important, right? The answer is: Yes.

God forgave us…so we should forgive others. Sometimes it can be hard – they could say mean things about us behind our back, say something mean right to your face, purposefully trip you…you get the point.

But with forgiving…comes not doing a mean thing back to that person.

Treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Ever heard that before? I hear it a lot.

One year, not too long ago, a friend of mine said some not-so-nice things to me. Yes, it was hard, but I shook it off and kept living my best life (and how can you live your best life if you’re always mad at that person?).

Today we’re good friends and don’t ever really think about that (I’m not even sure she remembers it!).

If I hadn’t forgiven her, we wouldn’t have the great relationship that we do now. I’m glad that God helped me forgive her.

In the song “Rotten To The Core” from the movie Descendants there’s a line that says: The past is past. Forgive, forget.

And it’s true. We just need to forgive…and then forget.

Question: Is there someone in your life that you need to forgive today? Ask God to help you.

I’m with you. If I stop to think about it, there’s been some times I’ve really been hurt by someone I considered a close friend. But the solution has always been to love and put it behind me.
I had a very close friend with whom I had had many wonderful times and close friendship. At one point she turned her back on me and said some very unkind, mean things to me. By God’s grace I was able to love on her and forgive her. Then later she came to me and told me it had been Satan that made her act that way and she asked my forgiveness. She’s no longer alive but I can truly say that I have nothing but warm memories and overflowing love for her.
