Did you know that, unlike other big cats, jaguars love water? They love to play in it! It’s not unusual to find them bathing, swimming, or hunting in streams or pools of water. Jaguars will sometimes swim to find fish and other food in the water.
The jaguars’ average life span is 12-15 years.
Also, they are such powerful animals that sometimes it only takes one bite for the jaguar to kill its prey.
Jaguars grow up to weigh 100 to 250 pounds, and when Jaguars stand up, they can be 4 to 6 feet tall…. The same weight and height as most adult humans.
Some black jaguars are so dark that it’s hard to see their spots, but most jaguars have tan or orange fur with rose-shaped black spots called “rosettes”.
Around 15,000 jaguars live in the wild now. They have almost been completely eliminated from the United States. Jaguar cubs are blind and helpless when they’re born. Their mothers protect them fiercely and teach them how to hunt and survive over the next two years. After that, they are on their own! Jaguars sometimes climb trees to hunt, but usually they hide in bushes or behind thick weeds, waiting to pounce on their next meal.
If you don’t like jaguars, then we’re complete opposites. I love jaguars (and just big cats in general)! They are such amazing animals. I hope that reading this short essay showed you at least a little glimpse of how cool they are, and taught you a little more about them!
Did you learn anything new about jaguars? And what’s your favorite big cat???
Glad you included pictures! I learned quite a lot of new info!
Happy to hear it!
So cool !! Really well written !
I am wondering if jaguars and other big cats have any enemies. Lions are called King of the beasts. It seems like big cats are on the top of the food chain.
Very good information. Looking at the baby jaguar makes you want to cuddle one but I know it’s not a good idea.
Jaguars don’t have any enemies, other than humans. We need to protect our rainforests (and every part of the earth!) and the animals in it.
Haha, I know, right?!
I really did learn a lot, and they are really cool animals. I especially liked the fact about how they are the weight and height of an average adult. “SO COOL!”
