Philippians 4:8 (Devo, R2D6)

Philippians 4:8 was one of the first Bible verses I memorized. Just a little refresher for y’all:

Philippians 4:8: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

I think it’s such a good verse because it’s really important what we think about.

Our mind is like a garden. Whatever we plant grows.

THESE ARE TRUE FACTS, PEOPLE!!

Whatever movies you watch, whatever books you read, whatever pictures you see online and on social media, whatever you hear other people say: Those things go into your brain.

Let’s say that you hang out with not the right friends, and they say a lot of bad words. The more and more you hear those words, the more and more they grow in your brain, and the more they grow, the more likely you are to say them. This applies to everything in life.

It’s so important what we let into our minds. If you’re at a sleepover, and your friends want to watch a movie that you know your parents don’t approve of, SAY SOMETHING. Sure, they may laugh at how stupid your parents’ rule is, but isn’t that better than waking up throughout the night with nightmares? (Okay, maybe a little extreme, but you get the point.)

What we let into our mind matters. When you hear or see something, you think, think, think, think, think, think, think, think, think, and think about that inappropriate picture or that explicit song.

So this upcoming year (and always), watch what you let into your mind. 

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Daily Challenge: If you have troubles with letting bad stuff into your mind (or even if you don’t), put Philippians 4:8 up somewhere where you’ll see it everyday. Maybe in your backpack, in your locker at school, in your basketball bag, on your mirror – you could even put it in your shoe (hehe)!

    I’m thinking of the verse that says “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”. Matthew 12:34. Same principle. What we allow into our eye gate or our ear gate will eventually take root in our life. Excellent Devo!

    Great Devo and such an important topic! Goes along with one of my favorite verses: “You (God) will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” Isaiah 26:3
